Excessive wear on tires
 

Hello everyone, I have been having some problems with excessive wear on the inside edge of my rear tires. this is a problem that has been presistant since i go the car 25000mi ago. in that time i went through the initial set of tires. had them replaced but put the fresh tires in front and the front tires in the rear( they were still pretty good). now the rear tires are also worn severely on the inside edge. any ideas what is causing this. the car is not lowered or modified in any way but there is a noticable squatting of the rear wheels(they lean inward toward the car like this /==== \) what could it be. the suspension passes the bounce test but it can be jarring over potholes etc.... before i go ahead and change any thing i would appreciate some ideas. i guess now that i think about it the front tires also slowly wear on the outer edge. and the right front tierod end is some what loose.

This is what your problem is.
This is due to some damaged suspension parts, broken springs, heavy load of junk in the trunk, worned bushings etc.

Thanks Jack i suspected that the squatting was responsible for tehe uneven wear. my trunk does not have any excessive junk in it, and like i said the suspension recoveres nicely when bounced this leaves the bushing in doubt, how do i determine if they are bad. i like to carry out very specific trouble shooting before i start changing things as that can get inefficient and very expensive.

Twenty year old springs can sag enough to give odd wear .but would also have shocks and bushings checked.............

Along with wear-related items, have you had an alignment done lately?

Toe-in, camber, etc. is EXTREMELY critical on these cars...it makes the difference between getting 35K or 10K of use on your tires!

I was going through rear tires on my W124 every two years! After a careful alignment, rear tire wear was more in line with the fronts...and my replacement interval was more like 40K...

I had this problem too with the rear tires ( squatting ). I had replace springs with HD and put in new shocks, ..but the situation remains the same after a week or two. I brought the car to a Frame and Alignment shop, ...it took them a long time to figure out that my sub-frame is slightly bent. They used lots of force to adjust the toe-in situation and now the rear tires looks straight as new. No more changing tires every two years..
