190E Idle problems, fuel overload..
 

My 87 2.3 190E starts hard, idles bad, floods out like it is getting too much gas and not enough air. I have replaced fuel dist. fuel regulator, injectors, idle control valve. Get the car above 1200 rpms and runs like new? Have had system adjusted and spent hundreds trying to get this thing to run right, anyone know what controls the idle control valve? Is my computer going out? Can the voltage overload relay cause all this? Please help as I am at my ropes end with this.

From my (limited) experience (hehe),

Cold hardstart - faulty cold start valve
Warm hardstart - faulty fuel accumulator or fuel pump check valve (suspected especially if fuel pump has not been recently renewed)

When you say that it floods out like there is too much gas, how did you arrive at this conclusion? Bad fuel mileage, black smoke, severe hesistation at low revs, etc?

You have changed all the items (esp the BIG TICKET part - fuel distributor) that could POSSIBLY contribute to your car running rich (if it is indeed the case).I have worked on 190Es which ran rich and some required swapping out either the fuel dist, fuel reulator or fuel injectors - you have done them all.

Please provide more details and I'll try to help you out as much as I can.

My 190E had the same problem last year (it was discussed in a long thread on this site as well as 190revolution.net - see "babybenz") and I solved it by swapping out the fuel distributor which I got from the wreckers at $500 or USD280 (great deal!).

Unplug CIS-E and start it, if it runs ok. Replace the OVP. I've seen this once and could not beleive it fixed it.

I have replaced fuel accumulator and fuel pump check valve, fuel dist., injectors, plugs, wires, etc.. Complete tune up, tank off and cleaned. fuel pressure checked. Seems like it still is hitting on 3 when idle. Black smoke after idleing for a min or so. Bad smell of raw gas and can't find the leak.

What is CIS-E? What is OVP?

Try to disconnect the connector to the EHA (that little black box at the side of the fuel distributor) and see if the car runs OK.

If it does, you may wanna check/test/swap the OVP (over voltage protection) relay cause if it's faulty, there's no control current to the EHA (the fuel injection system).

The OVP is a relay located behind the car battery.It is a silver relay with a red or black top depending on which one is installed in your car.The one with the red top has two fuses on it and the black one has only one fuse on top.

Check and replace the fuse(s) first before you go any further.

If the fuses are OK. check if the relay itself is working.

There is information in the archives on how to test the OVP if I remember correctly.

Fuel Dist...
 

The rebuilt fuel dist. was the problem, covered by my mechanic after I figured out the problem. Mechanic just didn't want to order another and put it on. I got him to order and changed it out myself and now runs fine! Still have strong smell of gas after replaceing the dist. and have no leaks that I or mechanic or body man can find?

Since the "EHA" valve/device is notorious for causing gasoline fumes into the interior...

Could you please check that the seals are okay and that there are no cracks in the body?

Smell Stopped
 

It was the seal at the tank where the fuel gage fits. Seal wasn't replaced by mechanic when tank was removed and cleaned....

Had the gas smell when I bought my 190 and replaced the little green orings on the EHA and got a new gas cap and it took care of the smell.

When you replaced the EHA did you use new orings or the old ones? If you used the old ones, get new ones.
