what are these parts???

on my 1987 300E, there is a small, cylindrical plastic piece that is threaded that goes through a hole in the sheetmetal above each headlight, and the bottom part of this piece connects to the top of the headlight housing. What are these things??? When I converted headlights to Euros, I couldn't get these pieces to stay put on the Euro lights. They don't seem to do anything that I can see.

Oh THOSE things. I know what you mean. I think they are just supposed to help hold the headlight unit more secure, sure don't seem to do much though. Mainly the headlight is held in place by 2 screws that go in through the side under the turn signal lenses, and anothe single screw (I believe) that goes in from the AC condensor side. If you replaced the headlights you already know this.

They fill the holes in the radiator support some monkey programmed in the die cutter. It was cheaper to make the plugs than to retool and remake 1.2 million radiator supports. :D

But they DO engage into the headlights. Or do you think that's just to hold the plug parts in place? If they were just to fill the holes, I would think they could have devised something a little less elaborate than something like those. Could be right though....
