87 300E Shifting Problem Need Help/Advice
Hey All,
My 722 trans is acting up. It doesn't want to shift into 4th gear. I was heading out on the freeway and it just wouldn't shift into 4th. Drove about 40mph @ 4000rpm to get off the freeway. It wouldn't shift manually either. Full throttle or not. When I unhooked the vacuum modulator line, plugged it and went for a drive, it shifted through all gears fine. Just shifted too firmly. So, does this sound like the modulator is bad or needs adjusting? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |
Sounds to me like your kick down switch is stuck.

Is this switch at the throttle linkage or the gas pedal? |
Beneath the pedal.

Bowden cable
Hi,
I had a similar problem with my bowden cable. I sort of bent it while removing my oil filter. The car would shift, but at a higher RPM. I straightened the cable and put a few drops of ATF through the sleeve and most of the linkages. That solved my problem. BOWDEN CABLE: It's the cable running from your tranny to the throttle linkage. It's right next to or even touching the oil filter. Remove your air filter assembly and it'll be obvious. cheers, |
Okay. I will try unhooking the switch to see if it works. My linkage is lubed and adjusted.
I noticed that the plastic housing for my kickdown solenoid is cracked all the way around and barely wet from trans fluid. Do you think I may need to replace the solenoid? Or is that just cosmetic? Thanks again |
The cracked leaking kick down solenoid is probably the cause of your shifting problem. It’s part of the governor circuit; you are dropping governor pressure. Remove the wire and use an 18mm wrench to UN bolt the solenoid it is easy to change.
