AC problem

interesting AC problem with the C280 (1998). when the car is started the "EC' light is on and the compressor is not engaged. If i push and hold the EC button about 20 seconds, it is unlit, compressor engages and AC is on. Need to repeat every time car is started.
What is the process to read the fault codes on the AC unit? Also has anyone else seen this problem, and may be devised a solution?
