Help !!- Timing guide rail pi dropped 91 560SEL

I am in the middle of replacing the upper guide rails. I accidentally dropped one pivot pin inside(right side) the engine. It happened while I was removing the pivot pin. I heard it settle somewhere at the bottom. I need to know whether it could have landed at the bottom oil pan, or do I have to remove the timing cover to retrieve it? Dont ask me how, but it got too slippery holding the upper guide rail with one hand and trying to pull the pin out with the other hand. I disengaged the bolt I used to pull the pin because I was trying to start with the other pin. big mistake...

appreciate your help

Pull the subpan and see. Its a pretty easy job. It should have made it to the pan and I imagine you will be able to find it from the bottom. You won't have to pul the cover, I would think.

thx steve. You meant the bottom oil pan right? That is what I thought it sounded like when it hit something somewhere at the bottom. I replaced the bottom oil pan not too long ago, so it is still fresh in my mind what I need to do. do i need a new pan gasket?

thx again.

Probably not. I would use a small amount of sealer on the old gasket if it comes off clean.

Could you try draining the oil and fishing thru the drain hole with a magnet on a stick??? How about getting one of those bigass magnets and trying to sweep it to the hole from outside the bottom of the pan?
Good luck.
