instrument cluster bulbs

On a 1993 mercedes benz 300E can the bulbs be replaced in the instrument cluster from the back side? Can the cluster be pulled out the front without taking the bottom panel off. I didn't know if there was enough slack in the spedo cable to do this or not. If the cluster has to come out can you do it without taking the steering wheel off? Any info would be appreciated.

You'll want to unclip the speedometer cable from the panel under the driver's side floormat, in the vicinity of the brake pedal. This should provide enough slack to pull the cluster out. It helps if you extend the steering wheel as far out as possible.

When replacing the bulbs, DO NOT use 5-watt 194 type wedge bulbs. The correct bulb is Sylvania 2821. 5 watt bulbs will melt the light prisms.

You can get them at the typical Kragen, Autozone, Napa, Pep Boys, etc shops.
