Question 82 380SL A.I.R. Pump

All:
I am going to attempt to de-bug this 144,000 mile beast myself one problem at a time with the help of those knowledgeable and helpful enough to assist. The HVAC and cruise will have to wait while I deal with some operational (driving) problems first.
The car starts well and idles smoothly...at first. The A.I.R. pump clutch relay chatters constantly and the clutch engages and disengages wildly for some time (10-15 minutes). The idle fluctuates each time the clutch engages. After this time period elapses, the relay stops chattering and the clutch remains disengaged. When allowing the car to idle when fully warm, it idles smoothing @ 8-9000 rpm for around 30 seconds. Then the idle drops to around 5,000 and is very rough. When moving away, there is a distinct lag in throttle response and a great deal of black smoke is seen in the mirrors. I haven't had it long enough to establish gas mileage but I have gone down an indicated half tank in about 60 miles. I don't know if the A.I.R. pump and the rich idle problems are related, but as they both effect idle speed, I offer them up together.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Regards
BB
