It appears I must remove the balancer from our 82 240D to extract broken crank pulley bolts. My Haynes manual says to use the center (large) bolt to press it back in original position. I read here, and from another member, that this may not be correct proceedure. Comments? Have broken 9 drill bits and 3 easy outs trying extract sheared bolts without removing balancer. Ideas? Thanks, Dusty

I have found that heating stuck bolts with a torch works wonders. Drill them out heat them and try easyout before they cool.

If that doesn't work, can you weld something to the broken bolts and turn that. The welding may heat the bolts enough that they may come loose.

Thanks, PEH. I have used a small propane torch, but have concerns about damaging the front seal with too much heat. The bolts feel like they have loc-tite on them, some can actually be moved back and forth befor binding solid. Most are broken in hole, nothing to weld to. Titanium bits last 2 seconds, masonary bits do nothing. Thanks for ideas, though. Dusty
