Do Self Leveling Struts Fail?

Hi,

Just wondering what the failure mechanisms beyond visible external leaking might be for the rear self-leveling shocks on the W124 300TE/ E320T type vehicles.

I have heard that they can leak internally. Is this plausible? Common?
