This is a farce. If you want a new key, you must go to a dealer and order one. The dealer will fax proof that you own the car, proof of who you are and the VIN number to Mercedes. They will ship a new key back to the dealer. The cost is around $22. You must go to the dealer to order the key and you must go to the dealer to pick it up. |
I ordered an additional key at a dealer on October, 2003. $16.

Hm.. a local locksmith said he could dup my W124 key for $30. Ouch.. :P I only have one of them (used car) do I *need* to order it from MBZ or can I get it done at the local locksmith... or is the locksmith just high?
If I can order it for around $20 from MBZ I'd rather have the real factory key (aftermarket blacks are often of inferior quality and I've already had one car with a key that busted off in the ign.. oh.. how that stank). I'll be watching this thread! :) |
i just got a key. dealer only item, you will need your vehicle registration and drivers license. as noted above, dealer will send copies to mercedes who will ship them a key.
price will vary. mine was $36, and they tried to get me for $52 when it was time to pick up. shop around the various dealers in your area. an independent said he could get me a duplicate key, but also said it would basically be through mercedes anyway. |
Mercedes Benz of Miami are crooks
Went to the dealer and they said $35 for the key...Ok, kinda expensive but whatever... Get the bill to pay at cashier, and they added $15 SHIPPING!!! WTF!? I told that there must be a mistake for such a small item and he said no, $15.... Needless to say I cancelled the order.
I will have to find another means to get one, or go to an out of town MB dealer to order from, F it! This is the same dealer that tried to sell me a worn out 95 E320 for $14K:rolleyes: |
I got a key for my 300E about a year and a half ago. I think I paid $22 plus tax from a dealer in Scottsdale, AZ. The only bad part was that I had to drive all the way across the Valley twice. Once to order and once to pick it up.
The good news is that they are close to a Cheesecake Factory. Key=$22. Two lunches at the Cheesecake Factory=$80. |
I purchased one of these flip keys on ebay. There are a few folks who sell these. I then found a locksmith who can cut these keys. He charged me $24 per key (I had a couple of regular blanks I wanted done also).
Bottom line, if you just want a regular blank, go to the dealer as it's usually around $35. If you want a flip, you need to find a locksmith with the right equipment. |
I had a key made at the dealer for around $20.00.

I had my extra key made at the dealer but was not happy with the quality at all. The new key has "very" sharp edges and it was going to cut the fingers if i kept them in the pocket trying to pick it out.
when i asked the dealer they said that's how they're made. I didn't want to fight because the key does work but i've never used it afterards. keep it as a spare. but it's nothing like the original. is that how the replacement keys usually are ? it'm referring to the 260E key. |
Benz300, simply take a small wire brush and brush the sharp edges ... it dulled the sharp edges on the new key I purchased recently.
|
thanks for the tip, I'll try that.
but is that how the keys were for the w124 when the cars were purchased new ? sharp edges like blades ? |
