mechanic says I need " rearconnecting links", what would he mean by these?
I am speaking of my father's 300E. The L/R wheel in particular is tilting in at the top, it is easy top notice with just your eyes. Anyways, we took it to a local indie and he said that we need rear connecting links, $500. Anyways, fastlane doesn't list such a part. Is it an item that has to be special ordered or it is general terminology that the rear suspension needs to be redone?
Thanks David |
The rear suspension has five links on each side, and Mercedes has a specific name for each, but independents may not use MB terminology.
Suggest you have your guy pull out a schematic and point out the problem area, or have him put the car up in the air and show you. Duke |
by links do you mean bushings or joints?
Thanks David |
How many miles on it? If about 150k, they need to be replaced. Some of the links, you cant buy the bushings anymore, just the link which comes with new bushings.
My brothers and I each have a w124 and we all did it at about 150k. |
Would I want to replace all the parts then or what?
Thanks David |
Well if that is the problem, then yes.
If you put it in drive, then reverse with your foot on the brake you will notice the the left rear wheel jumping around...since you said the left rear was the one giving you trouble. replace both sides at a time to be safe. |
The bushings or joints are not replaceable separately. You have to replace the whole link, or arm, that has worn bushings. See this thread for a discussion of the various arms and links in the W124 rear suspension:
