really really really dumb question
how do i get the mercedes cd to work.
i have a copy of the 124 cd but i dont know how to make it work. i put it in the drive and i get several selections to choose (open using ......insert name of program here; windows media player, i tunes (i tunes for fuxsakes!!!) inter video, etc etc etc) if i click on start, my computer, drive f etc then it runs but only some of it (images but not text) shows and it says i need a plug in. if i click on that, with netscape it takes me to a plug in finder and i have to choose one. with IE it says i need one and i can find it on the cd. i just want the damned thing to run so i can use it. i tried it with netscape and with IE. i downloaded adobe and its still acting up. this is very frustrating as my car is dead right now. (300e 2.6 not starting!) can someone please help me before i junk an otherwise great car. TIA |
MB CD
My copy utilizes an older version of Acrobat Reader. The correct version should be in a AR folder on disk one.
If you install it, I think it will run the CD without a problem. At least this is what worked for me. If it's any consolation, it took me a while. I assumed that because I had AR already I didn't need to do anyting else. |
i knew i already had it on my computer as well. i just downloaded a version just in case the disk looked for it only in a certain place or something.
i will do as you suggest. hopefully it will resolve this. thank you. |
Let Me know
Let me know how it turns out.
The version that worked for me is AR 3.01. 5.0 didn't. I had assumed newer versions always worked with older documents. I'm not sure what the idiosyncrasy is with the MB CD. |
This is one thing that has driven me absolutely nuts about the CD.
I now have it copied down completely to its own directory on my computer. I look up the page number in Internet Explorer, and then use Acrobat 6.0 to manually open up the page. Arrghhhh! |
you're having this prob. because acrobat reader is not registered as the default program to open up your .pdf files.
in order to do that, when you get the option of which program you want to choose, you should choose acrobat reader instead of the other options that you listed. seems like you already chose internet explorer as the default hence opening the pages up in IE. is that what happens now when you click on the file or do you still get a list of programs ? easily fixed. let me know where u're at. |
I usually open acrobat reader and from windows explorer drag and drop the file onto AR. I use version 6 and it works for me.

Problem is more complex. Won't go into it right now - well, maybe just a little bit - issue is that .pdf files default to the latest version of AR (6.0 or something like that), and the CD does not like that (it likes the older version). So if you have a newer version, it wants to install the older version, and then you file association revert to that (not good). Next comes the problem that IE 6.whatever and AR 6.whothehellcares don't get along as well as they should (maybe because of the Norton Anti-everything-nothing-works), and then your machine hangs forever as the object relationship beween IE and AR is being worked out. At least this is happening in XP. Of course you need the IE because the indexing (those pretty little dots with the topic names next to them) is done in html. Ah - the world we live in....! |
You can resolve most AR6 IE6 issues by turning off PDF display in web browser. Neat feature, but it causes more problems than anything else.
|
AR 3.01 vs 6.0
I now have both versions on my computer. I think 3.01 is indeed now the default version, which works fine when I want to use my MB CD.
If a .pdf document won't open correctly in 3.01, I close it, open 5.0 & reopen the document. It hasn't been a problem for me to do it this way. |

You can remove most avionics errors on an airplane but just hitting the avionic master switch - neat toys, but you should be able to pilot by dead reconing anyhow. This industry STINKS, an I am so so tired of it.... (I am sorry, I am German, and originally from Stuttgart. I believe that if you build it, it should work, otherwise don't sell it. But I must admit, at 38, I am a Dinosaur...) |
I have XP and AR6.1 on my laptop. Works good, except on opening the first work section, it lags while all the AR BS loads. Once that is done it works fine.
Just now I started the program to see how long it took, once it loaded I got an update message for AR6.2. Took a chance and downloaded it. Now the book section open straight away. ON my home system I had to dump AR5 and reinstall AR3 to keep my MB CDs operating. |
Mike,
AR works fine standalone. I have no problem there. I am talking about AR as a browser object. How are you using it? By the way, how did you get AR 6.2 - I just checked the site, and they are still on 6.0.shouldafixeditthefirsttime. |

You should write comedy. That's a creative sense of humor you have.

When I use the CD's I don't use the normal star/run thing, I go into the pogram folder and open the particular chassis manual I need. Thast way I don't have to listen to the sound clip or watch the video...I jump right into the job index. When I open the first job AR launches.
I don't have my laptop with me here in California so I can't verify which version I upgraded to last night...it might be 6.0.2 but I thought I saw it was 6.2. I'll check next week when I get back to Michigan. The upgrade was found during AR's automatic search for upgrades/updates. |
If you want to be able to quickly and easily use the information on a MB Service Library CD, you might want to use one of my Indexes.
You can find one here. Available for the following Models: 107, 116, 123, 124, and 126. My Indexes work with any PC, Mac, Linux or Unix operating system - in fact, anything that uses html. After you download and unZip the file, read the simple instructions in the ReadMe file. |

So either
a) Adobe screwed up when the made AR6 b) Other companies are making PDF files that don't conform to the PDF format properly.
|

I have just downloaded your indexing system. I have not tried it yet, but I have to say one thing - just the idea of trying this, and the work you have put into this, deserves much praise! I am looking forward to using it. Thanks so much! |
Hey Dakota,
Whatzup? Your web site does not seem to be up. I was trying to revisit the download (the index files were missing from the zip file or something of the sort), and now my browser does not see your site. Just a heads up (or down?...) -HB |
hbofinger,
We had a pretty good electrical show in the sky last night, so I turned my computer off about midnight. I turned it back on this morning, but forgot to activate my Apache server. As soon as I get home this afternoon, it should be up and running (about 5pm). |
That's a pretty funny conincidence...
I am in Washington, D.C., on the other side of the country, and we had a pretty good thunderstorm here last night too, and my dsl went South (I'm on a dial-up right now). :p |
An even stranger coincidence...
My brother-in-law in Washington D.C. got hit by lightning in that storm last night and was rescued with CPR from a passerby. He's in the hospital recuperating. They still have to check him out internally.
|
Kestas -
Where was he? I heard one that came down - when you have a bang and a lightning at the same time, at enormous volume, you know it struck very, very close. This was only the third time in my life I have heard somthing like this. I heard sirens a little later, but not immidiately. |
He works at the Pentagon, though I don't know if that means he works in the building itself. I only got sketchy details. He was walking to his car from work where there are large trees when he was struck. I'm guessing the bulk of the lightning hit the tree and one of the arcs branched off along the ground and struck him. I don't think chances are good for surviving a direct hit. His shoes and clothes were shredded.
Edit/Update: I got more details. My brother-in-law was walking from the State Department past the Lincoln Memorial when he got struck. The lightning bolt entered his hip, and branched off exiting his shoulder and foot. He was on fire and people had to extinguish the flames. It was a Secret Service Agent that came to his rescue. His hair melted. One eardrum is punctured, the other one is damaged. He should recover from this. He'll be out of the hospital this evening. Other than maybe his ears, he should make a full recovery. Reporters from one of the local papers came to interview him and take pictures of him and the clothes he wore. I'm curious which paper that could be so I could look it up on the web. |
Here's the story..
|
Kestas,
Sorry I am slow to respond - my DSL is still down, so I am using dial-up. I saw the story in the Post and knew it was him. The reason why I was so curious where he was at is because I'm certain I heard the bolt come down - you know when something is less than a mile away or so when you hear the thunder and see the bolt at the same time - it's usually shockingly loud and rather scary. We live right behind the Capitol on the Hill, close enough to the mall. I am glad he is going to make it - what a trooper! They had his picture in paper, recovering. Very radient. Also picture of the sorry remains of his shoes! |
Small world!

Dakota - The site still does not seem to be up - I was trying to download. Do you need to boot up?
Cheers, HB |
Good morning HB,
They changed my "psuedo-static" IP last night, which they do every 4 or 5 months. It should be working now. Thanks for informing me. Let me know if you have any more trouble. |
Dakota - thanks, got it.
Even though I went with static IP on Earthlink (or pseudo-static, as I have also come to realize), I've given up hosting at home - with a DSL line, the upload speeds are just too slow. I use a cheap but good hosting serivce for my low-bandwitdth stuff (I am not kidding you - $8 a year at hostwalk.com!), and then I have a high bandwidth service that allows multiple domains for my picture-intensive stuff. I put pictorals there (I just did the expansion valve on the 560 SEL) |
