Swaping rear gears on 92 300??

I ask because my 300E is getting crummy milage, about 21 max, all highway back and forth between baltimore and DC, where as my 93 300ce is getting 25-26, I know they are geared different, but I forget the exact ratio's,

but to get to the point is it worth trying to swap out new (replacement) rear gears for better milage,

what interesting is the off the line accleration is not that different between the two cars, even with the 40+hp difference, but the 300e is spinning at about 3200rpm at 82 mph, where as the 300ce is spinning at 2400 at 85 mph, if this is more trouble than its worth tell me cause I have never messed with the rear end on a W124
