Have read that diesel engines are prone to cavitation injury to cylinder walls and that coolant additives are needed to prevent this problem. Does M.B. coolant provide this protection?

I don't know about Mercedes, but Red Line makes a product called Water Wetter that works great. You might do a search as that's how I found out about it.
