W124 250TD self levelling upgrade?

Hi,
i have just bought a 1989 250TD and discovered the rear self-levelling suspension is shot. the car bounces when pushed down and thus i believe the dampers have failed.
i have heard that there is an upgrade that allows the original self levelling suspension to be bypassed thus allowing ordinary (read cheap!) shocks to be fitted.

just wondering if anyone can confirm this is the case on my model?

many thanks
