I plan to switch my CC this weekend. This involves removing the steering wheel. Any thing to watchout for regarding the airbag or disconnecting the power. I have a Becker radio.

I have never done this on your model, but are you SURE that you have to remove the steering wheel?

I believe that I do. I have the one page R&R from the W124 Chassis manaul. I begins with disconnect battery, remove steering wheel.

In that case, you probably do. I'd give it a good look first though.

Well I left the chassis manual at home and can't do this job. Nevertheless the procedure can NOT be what was in the book, because the '87 has an airbag and it wasn't clear with a quick look how to remove that.

Anyone with a clue how to get the horn switch, airbag and steering wheel off. Or better yet as Larry suggests there may be a better way. I've got one more day of vacation. Thanks,

It is not that hard. You will need a long T30 wrench to get out the airbag and a large allen to get off the wheel.

After this, it is just a matter of taking off the lower dash panel and routing the wires correctly.

Mysoder,

Yes, there are two screws at the back of the steering wheel. You can loosen but not remove them completely. The T30 socket is about three inches long. Once they are loose, pull the airbag assembly out and disconnect the wire (store the airbag right side up in case of accidental deployment. Then take a 10mm allen and a breaker bar (1/2") and remove the wheel but don't forget to matchmark the wheel and the hub so when you put it all back together it's lined up correctly. Change the CC switch and re-assemble everything in reverse order, re-connect the airbag and tighten the two screws at the back of the wheel. Good luck!

When you loosen the 2 screws (on the back of the wheel), does the entire airbag assembly (with steering wheel cover) lift off?
