terminal case?
I need some advice concerning the viability of a 1980 450SEL. Here's the story: Initially it had a rough idle. After approx. 10 min. it would stall. I checked voltage @fuel pump was ok, measured fuel output was within normal limits, resistance and voltage @ warm up compensator ok, bled fuel distributor lines and cleaned inlet screen. Strong fuel odor had leak @throttle body sleeve as it was brittle so replaced it, continued to smell fuel, replaced intake manifold gasket and all 8 intake sleeves , replaced injectors, sleeves, gaskets, replaced ign. wires and plugs. After re-asbly. i was able to start with some difficulty but ran high rpms approx 4000. then died. i check throttle positioning sensor and cleaned i was unable to test as i don't have a duty cycle tester. BTW this is a CIS Bosch KE with Lambda O2 sensor (light not illuminated). Now my dilemma, after the high rpms approx half qt oil on ground left front block yikes! Is is possible head gasket is blown? Money is tight and i'm not emotionally attached to the car. Can a head gasket blow and only leak oil and not overheat? Is it economically wise to repair or should i scrap out? any and all advise appreciated. sorry for the long post. Spencer S.
