Oil in coolant stupid question
I have a head gasket leak on my 300E, dumping some oil into the coolant reservoir. My question is, why does it only show up in the reservoir? When I replaced a couple of old hoses recently, the coolant that flowed out was clear & clean, with only a small trace of contamination.
It also seems i can go a couple of weeks with just a small amount of gunk floating on the top, then one day I'll check it and it'll look like chocolate milk??

why does it only show up in the reservoir?
Because oil is lighter than water, it will tend to collect at the highest point of the cooling system. When the engine's off, oil will slowly creeps into the reservoir. JackD |
