94 e320 Code 5 EGR Inoperative
I know this subject has been covered but, I can't get the SEARCH to work. I keep getting the "not enough words" reply.
When only Code 5 is indicated "EGR Inoperative," does it mean replace the egr valve or what else could be causing the EGR to be inoperative. Two weeks ago, I had the Code 26 "Upshift delay switch over valve open or shorted." Could they be related? The "cost of ownership" devil was looking the other way because I only needed to replace the "U" shapped vacuum hose. And the 26 code hasn't returned. Bob |

It appears the first [and cheepest] things to do are replace the plastic hose with a rubber one, test the vacuum on the EGR and spedo cable the metal tube from the EGR to the manifold. 1] How far [feet] should the cable go to do the job? 2] Where does the crud go that the spedo cable dislodges? Or isn't there that much too be concerned? 3] Can I damage anything with the spedo cable while doing the roter rooter routine? Bob P.S. Nice b/w over color pik. Worth a 1,000 words. P.P.S. Speaking of crud - I pulled the Plenum and intake manifold on my Scorpio. It's amazing how much accumulated in there and what a gallon of laquer thinner can do to it. |
I'm confused. Are we talking about the egr tube that snakes behind the engine and enters the intake system near the throttle? I'm confused because mine is made of steel.
I cleaned it really well when I had the head off and it was real easy to get at. There's a lot of bends in it. I measured roughly 38" of tube length. The crud is mainly concentrated at the first few inches where it connects at the intake. |
Bob, From what I know the code 26 is where the transmission upshift from 2nd to 3rd is delayed in cold weather because the catalytic convertor is not hot enough yet. My car has the same code and I have not fixed it yet. A search on this code is easy. I don't think it affects the car when it is warm out or the car is warmed up prior to driving.

The plastic/replace with rubber tube referred to is the vac line supply from engine to Switchover Valves.[ common line to egr/air swo's and common egr code fault]
If one suspects blockage at egr tube , the simple test is to apply vac to egr at idle and watch for engine roughness. [egr is not normally energizd at idle] If there is noticeable difference , than the tube is not blocked .......... |
