how do i go about testing the factory alarm in my 87 300e? ive never had it go off so i want to see if its still operational.
also, im planning on having a viper alarm installed due to expensive audio system. can the factory alarm continue to work as a backup. ( extra noise and more wires to cut)
will it interfear with the viper alarm?

I'm not sure if it is the same alarm, but on my '87 560SEL, the alarm will sound if the any of the doors are opened without unlocking them with a key. To test it, lower one of th windows, close and lock the doors, then reach in, unlock the door and open it. The horn should sound if your alarm is still good. As far as aftermarket alarms go, I had a Clifford Bullet IV installed in my car, and the factory alarm had to be disabled because the remote unlocks the doors. Since no key is used, the MB alarm would sound.

Justin is right, I have an 87 300E, and all you have to do is lower a window and lock the doors like normal with the key and reach in and open the door from the inside. My alarm still works great, good luck.

OR, pop the hood (though don't raise), climb out, lock car, raise hood and it should immediately fire on you. Remember - with the hood open it's REALLY loud. Learned this one the hard way (meaning that I wasn't expecting it and my heart seized for a few beats)...
