A friend of mine faileed inspection the other day becuase they said he had something wrong with the abs system on his 1988 300E. He said there was some sort of grinding noise like metal on metal when it was engaged. I'm not reall that familiar with the car but does this sound like something i could help him with or should he take it in?

Sounds more like worn out pads, metal to metal. The ABS doesn't do anything sitting still or moving till its needed, not likely to make any noises. It does have a pump that could make noise if it were tearing up but it only works when ABS is intervening.

Thats what I thought when he told me what the problem was. He also said he just had the pads replaced so I'm thinking someone did a half assed job on em.
