201 problem. Combination switch?

Dear listers,
My new to me 1986 190D has developed a problem. Nothing happens when I try to use the combination switch (turn signal switch). There is a light humming/screeching that seems to come from the combination switch area. Fuses are all new and fine. Any easy way to troubleshoot that? Car has 238 KMi and the combination switch seems to be original.
