has anyone any ideas on how to polish out 4 large scratchs from a wiper blade on to my wifes windscreen (the blade collapsed and she never noticed)

Drive it really fast on the freeway behind a semi. When a rock from the semi's tire cracks your windscreen, have it replaced. Many auto glass companies will eat some or all of the deductible, and you get a brand new windscreen for free...

Do a search (top right of your screen) on the detailing section there are some postings there about detailing the windscreen that might help.
