Searching for Glass Expert Austin/San Antonio
Can anyone recommend a quality glass technician?
I have two W115's and two W123's that need windshield and/or gasket replacement. I've had a couple local shops send guys out who said they could 'figure it out' One of them ruined the trim on my W115 220D. Soon as he took the first piece off I told him to stop and leave. I know I can 'figure it out' without damaging the trim... but I am swamped with other work, and glass & trim is not my favorite task... |

So I myself may be the quality glass technician I've been searching for all along...
I took all the glass out of a W123 300TD (wagon!) I am preparing for paint. NO broken glass and NO damaged trim. I'm hoping the same can be said when all the glass has been installed after paint (AND NO PAINT SCRATCHES) Guess I'll focus on the two W115 220D's that need windshield gaskets and headliners once the wagon has been delivered to the paint shop. I've done plenty of this work in the past...was just hoping to find a good dependable local tech for these projects. But like everything else...if you want something done right... STILL if anyone hears of a good glass guy that knows what he's doing around this era of Mercedes I'd appreciate the contact. |

My experience has been that a windshield leak, be it front or rear, on our old cars is usually accompanied by channel rust-out. Not as big a deal as sounds. It is generally repairable by a decent body shop for the $200-$300 range but ..... It requires R&R of the glass a chancy maneuver given that some of our glass is hard to come by if it is cracked in the process.

I know of a guy in San Antonio who works with a glass company who is supposed to be THE GUY for early MB windshield installs. This 30 minute video of an old timer showing how to do it on a W116 is also FANTASTIC. The same principles apply to other series with the aluminum/rubber seal/trim combination. See YouTube for: "Mercedes W116 Windshield Removal & Replacement"
