Something to do with the "You can dissolve a nail in a glass of Coca Cola" theory.

Could be an urban myth of course.
Tried it with three differnt nails did not evan mar the finish on the nails.

Three things.

1. Unless I missed it someplace, you have yet to explain what is actually wrong with this engine.

2. If you look at the cylinder head, on the side with the spark plugs, you should find a number cast into the head. It will start with 115, 121 or 102 That will give you an idea of which motor you've got in the car (since it isn't the original). If you look above the oil filter, you should find an engine number stamped onto a smooth, flat spot (or a pair of holes where an engine ID plate used to be riveted in place).

3. The car is just a shell that has room for people, and a power plant that makes it go (and a few other goodies like wheels, brakes & lights). You can put in any power plant you want and make the car go (within reason). As long as the shell is worth keeping, just tear out a "bad" motor and put in a less bad one.

But, it would sure help if described what was actually wrong. -CTH

PS. The simplest solvent for freeing a stuck engine, if that's what's wrong is a 50-50 fix of tranmission fluid and diesel.

220 motor

Hi

Is your 220 gas or diesel? I took the head of a 220d recently and can point you in the right direction.

Head removal

Don't give up. A Very helpful member poseted the workshop manual for a 300D at http://skinnerbox.steaky.org. It has a good description, photos and diagram showing all the bolts (including the two hidden 6mm ones at the front). Yours should be very similar. I wish I could find a manual for a 220 or 230E on the web.
Big tip; When removing the camshaft sproket don't let the big washer behind it with the TDC mark fall into the engine.
Cheers
Jack
