Front Crank Oil Seal on '76 230.4
What will I need to change the "radial oil seal" behind the harmonic balancer on the front. Mine started pouring oil about two weeks ago (PO hadn't driven much, car sat for a long time before that owner), a noticeable drip on the garage floor every thirty seconds. I've got the MB M115 engine manual, and it has a good write-up but shows a special tool to immobilize the pulley and a special puller. What is the "field expedient" way to do this? I noticed FastLane has the seal for $17, was surprised to see this seal so cheap - cheap usually means its a PITA to change out

Th seal for my brother's 190D was much cheaper, anyhow. just go to Autozone and rent a harmonic balncer puller. You may have to go to a hardware store to get the proper sized bolts, but any balancer puller should work. Or at least for me it did. The tool to immobilize the pulley won't be needed, so long as the engine spins the same way as my brother's car did. If it turns CCW, when looking at the front of the car. Well, just use reasoning, lock a breaker bar against the floor that is on the main bolt and activate the starter to break it free. That is of course depending on which way the engine turns. (by the way, do all engines trun the same way?) To put the bolt back on, use an impact and that should get it close enough to the specified 325nm or 200"#s. that's what it was on my brother's diesel, but I think it's pretty much the same for all MB's? let me knwo if you need more detailed instructions becasue I'm getting tired and rambling.
Thanks David
