This looks like a one-off "parade car", particularly given the
details. New York City had a '40 Chrysler set up like this (with a custom Derham body) that was still used in parades when the first astronauts were getting their ticker-tape parades.
The four-door "convertible sedan" was a fixture in American car lineups of all makes up until WWII. They were "convertible" because they had roll-up windows (roadsters and phaetons had side curtains) and "sedans" because the windows ran on tracks contained in removable center pillars. The last production 4-door Mercedes convertible would have been the soft-top version of the 300 "Adenauer", although this model and the '60s Lincoln Continentals weren't "sedans" because the center pillar was missing. Link is to a Packard convertible sedan showing the top down but the windows rolled up...movie note, Bogart drives a Buick convertible sedan to the airport in Casablanca. http://home.no.net/ayla/Packard/pages/1937%20Packard%20One%20Twenty.htm |
