Question Transmission swap: 6 cyl to 4 cyl

I am considering installing a 115.951 (4 cyl) engine into a W114 chassis. The engine needs a transmission.

Can anyone please tell me if the (M130) auto transmission will bolt to a 115.951 (4 cyl) engine. Many thanks to that forum member.

they'll bolt on w/o question. But, will it work? The hydraulic controls are different (different valve body, governor & modulator).

On the bright side, you can always convert to a 4-speed. That too will bolt up.

used engines are relatively cheap and plentiful. -CTH

Are you talking about the difference...

in power between a 6 cyl and 4 cyl? I am confused. You mentioned the 6 cyl transmission will bolt onto the 4 cyl. So what am I missing?

I think he's saying the tranny designed for the 6-cyl will shift at unpredictable RPMs and loads because the 4-cyl engine has a different power band and redline.

correct, the plumbing inside an automatic transmission is designed to react to the engine's power curves, gravity (hills), pavement and so on. These things are adjustable, once the transmission is disassembled, but it's a heck of a lot simpler to swap in the matching motor and transmission. -CTH

Did you notice the 220/8 in the cars FS section? No clue if the tranny works, but it's closer to what you need. -CTH

Thanks for all the answers

It sounds like I would be taking a chance with the 6 cyl transmission. I have 2 of these, 1 known good one, and the other from my parts car. Both are 4 speed auto. I guess I'll see how low of a price I can get the 230 engine.
