280 SE flywheel needed

I have a 79 280 SE, only 93K miles on it, but the previous (first) owner apparently had some starting troubles, as the flywheel/ring gear is so chewed up that half the time, my starter is trying to kick into missing teeth.

My latest mechanic (that's another story) tells me that I need to replace the flywheel and starter, then go on to other, smaller problems. Any suggestions on where to get a used flywheel? Parts for W116's seem to be hard to locate in the DC area.

If any of you have one available (oh, a starter would be nice, too), and care to contact me off-forum, I'd be most appreciative. Alternatively, if you can suggest where I could track one down, that would be nice as well.

Thanks for your help! I'm not about to junk my bomber just yet!

Sounds like you need the removable ring gear, not the flywheel itself. It's a part that should cost about 150$ new. Used starters are available pretty easily. All the M110 starters are the same. Wandering ebay for an hour should find something easily enough.

Thanks, I took a quick look around before posting, will dig some more, or just pay for the new part, as the part price is the small part of the replacement cost (I'm not good at the pulling the engine out kinds of things). Also probably need to chat with this mechanic; though he came well-recommended, I'm thinking he should have known the ring gear was a separate part (yes/no?).
