280 SE flywheel needed
I have a 79 280 SE, only 93K miles on it, but the previous (first) owner apparently had some starting troubles, as the flywheel/ring gear is so chewed up that half the time, my starter is trying to kick into missing teeth.
My latest mechanic (that's another story) tells me that I need to replace the flywheel and starter, then go on to other, smaller problems. Any suggestions on where to get a used flywheel? Parts for W116's seem to be hard to locate in the DC area. If any of you have one available (oh, a starter would be nice, too), and care to contact me off-forum, I'd be most appreciative. Alternatively, if you can suggest where I could track one down, that would be nice as well. Thanks for your help! I'm not about to junk my bomber just yet! Dinerfool, aka Karl G. |

Sounds like you need the removable ring gear, not the flywheel itself. It's a part that should cost about 150$ new. Used starters are available pretty easily. All the M110 starters are the same. Wandering ebay for an hour should find something easily enough.
