need info on 71 280slc

I am helping a friend with a 71 280 slc. I am not sure of the mercedes numbers but that is what I have as of now. Here is the situation. Got spark and had the bugger running for about 10 min by holding open the choke. Car than went dead. Did not have any smell of gas in the carb. Checked the fuel flow as best as possible for 10pm and discovered the fuel was as far as the vacumm valve just outside of the carb. Any hints as to what I can check. I am going to revisit spark and flow once the sun ip up again but as of today it seems there is no fuel getting into the carb. Upto but no getting into the carb. Thanks for any imput.
John

First, we need a correct model designation, since there are no SLC's in 71.
With two carbs? Is it a 280S or a 280/8. The last would only say 280 on the trunk. Both have zeniths. Search the archives here for "zenith". -CTH

Sorry I could not give you beter info on the car. From what I can tell from a parts book found in the car the engine is a m110. There is no name plate trunk. The car is a 71 with 6 cylinders and one carb. The plugs sit down in a well and are a PIA to get out. This all new to me since the last gas Benz I owned was a 190 Sl that I purchased for $200. I will do a search on Zenith carbs. Thanks again and any help is appreciated.

The 110 engine wasn't introduced until 1973, so there is no way it can be a 71 SLC. My guess is it MIGHT be an 81 SLC (not a popular model outside of Europe, BTW -- never sold in the U.S.). Your best bet is to find the VIN number (on top of the dash, left side or on the radiator support. That will tell us exactly what you have and lots more.

Thanks Folks,
All I can tell you at this point is that I am not going near the car again till I have to. I did get it running and I think that might of been a mistake. The owner took me and it for a test ride after not running(the car) for four years. Ya hoo. I expected the windows to not open but I could not get in the passenger side. She (owner) has got a lot of work to do and I am sure I will be back at the cars sooner than later. Here is the info I have. She swears it is a 71, it is a coupe and has a 6 cylinder engine with PIA spark plugs. The next time I am at the car I will get the VIN. Can anybody give me a ballpark figure on the points setting?I used the old matchbook feeler guage trick since I had no idea of what the setting might be. BTW that was the reason it did not restart. Fuel was OK afterall. Thanks again for your help.

going from memory, an M110 motor with a working transistorized ignition gets a 41 degree dwell with new points. They're good down to 34 degrees. -CTH
