"Major Cutout"

75 Mercedes 450. Everything was fine- no changing or touching anything.
All of a sudden, major cutout under acceleration- on or off-
doesn't seem like a fuel prob? but maybe a new ignition prob?
You are driving, accelerating- it cuts to nothing (shutoff),
Then it comes back- new and scary.
What should I check?

can't recall exactly when the W116 switched from D-Jet to K-Jet. my '73 has D-Jet so if yours does too, perhaps i can help.
