w111 steering gear

Is there a way to "come in a little bit" on the w111 fintail steering gears? The later boxes have a hex adjuster but these early ones appear to have a cap nut over another nut then a ring with provisions for a pin-wrench. Is this ring the adjustment? Mine has a ton of play in it and I actually get a little clacking noise coming back through the wheel over some larger bumps at the right angle. The linkage is spot-on with no play, it's all in the box. In other cars the recirc ball type of steering eliminates almost all feedback so I tend to think the "clack" I hear is due to play that shouldn't be there getting taken up. This is probably somewhat damaging and I'd like to eliminate it. How much play is normal in the wheel? Other than that the box feels great, with good return and normal effort.
