1973 220D question

I have a 1973 220D and the previous owner swapped out the engine for a 240D (unknown year) and put in a manual trans. I know of someone selling a 1976 motor very cheap (auto trans went out so parted out car). Will this work in my cars? (I also have a 1974 240D auto) I was thinking it could be a spare if my other engines ever gave up for whatever reason. Is it bad if the engine sits for a long time out of the car?? Will the tranmissions both fit in the engine? I don't know much about swapping engines or mechanics but I do know how much parts cost.
Thanks in advance for the insight,
Liz in Los Angeles

As long as the 240D engine come out of a W115 chassis, it's a drop in replacement for both your cars. The 220D and the 240D appear identical on the outside....

Again, trans will interchange, with the usual caveats about changing the flex plate for the flywheel.

thanks, I was also wondering if it is going to be a problem if the engine is just stored for (hopefully) years before I end up using it.
