I do believe that Ümläüt has been abused by the previous owner.
Evidence of poor bodywork, oil thicker than blackstrap, "Meijer Brand" 10W-40 in the trunk, clutch slave cyl leaking so bad and for so long that it actually corroded the end off the cylinder shaft - they thought the clutch was goin' bad so they bought a new Sachs clutch kit and put it in the trunk. The reality is that the clutch was simply oil-fouled.
Now the best - I pulled the OEL cap off the IP and it's BONE FREAKING DRY oh dear god I hope I saved it in time. I drove it no more than 5 miles before pulling the starter and replacing the vacuum pump (which appears to have been leaking for quite some time) The starter was abused pretty badly - I pulled it apart hoping to put the armature on the lathe and clean up the commutator, but it's worn right through to the nubs and the bendix is fried as well. I'm super worred about the IP, however. I'm not exactly sure how far to fill it up, there doesn't appear to be a weep plug for "full" indication. Any danger of being too full? Also, straight 30 weight? |

More people in DD will be able to answer this quickly, so I'm going to clone the thread to the Diesel forum.

I know how you feel stimpy. My Wilma (250CE) was absolutely battered when I got her. Now, however... SHE RUNS! Her trans fluid probably hadn't been changed since before we pulled troops out of southeast asia, it looked like Hershey syrup and smelled like the bottom of a barbeque pit. Lets not talk about what came out of the engine oil pan.
But you'll be able to fix your car. I have faith in you ;) |

They seem to last forever - I know a guy who fixes the pumps and he said me that usually the old IPs that come to him have not got the oil since last decade.
Luckily if the injection-pump is damaged, there´s plenty of those in the world. I actually bought a similar good motor as yours and the rest of the car for around 400 $ for spare parts. Green bastard. With a brand new starter-motor. Unfortunately I have suicidal friends and one nastily blacmailed me sell him the car for restoring.. I sold it with same price but kept the starter. http://www.kamera-petteri.fi/W115220D.jpg |
Hopefully this restoration will find you replacing the gold buckled battery belt with the factory-correct silver buckled variety.
