350 engine in 450SEL?
I'm getting the w116 bug again and this time I don't know that I want another diesel. I love the reliability but the power of the V8 is more appealing. I realize they're smogged down, but I'd change most of that stuff. Or, now that I'm thinking about it, maybe a 560SEL engine/trans. would be a good thing to drop in the car. Back on topic... I'm pretty sure the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same for the two trannies, but what about driveshafts and rear-ends? Is it really even worth the effort? It seems to me that the 4 spd. would be better for economy and acceleration.
Thanks, David

So what's wrong with a 450 engine in a 450 SEL?

I'm sorry, I meant 350 transmission in a 450 car. The 350 is a 4 spd. vs. the 450 3 spd. transmission.
Thanks, David

I didn't know that the 350 trans was a 4 speed unless it was a Euro manual trans. Even then 4th is still 1:1 so the fuel economy would presumably suffer at and bonus of better acceleration around town. On the freeway it would presumably do no better.

350's came with a 4 speed manual option which is quite rare or a 3 speed auto. The 4 speed auto went away with the w108/w109 3.5's.
I think that the final drive is the same on the 3 speed and the 4 speed so off the line acceleration would be the only benefit.

Thanks, guys. As I figured, there wouldn't be much benefit of switching to the auto 4 spd. If I did do it, I would have used the 4 spd. auto from a 108 3.5. Then again, like many old Benzes, it would be pretty sweet to have a manual 4 spd. in a 450SEL.
Thanks, David

My 71 350SL is a 4 speed auto, however with a fluid coupling rather than torque convertor, model 722.201. They stopped in early 72 from what I know and went all to the 3 speed torquer.
To be honest there's not alot of difference, it hits 2nd quick so essentially doing the same job of the torque convertor 3 cogger....unless you hold her in 1st...she gets going pretty quick with the 3.46 rear end and that perky 3.5! Cheers all. |
