Shift lever removal

How do I remove the shift lever from the automatic transmission on my 1980 280se? I can't remember if the knob twists off or if I have to go under the car.

The knob is probably molded to the lever. That's how all the 123s are that I have seen.

Remove the wood surrounding the shift lever. Remove the 3 bolts holding the black plastic shift assembly. Loosen the 15 mm nut at the base of the shift lever and unscrew the knob and lever assembly.
