transmission compatability '75 into '72?
I have located a 75 mercedes w/good auto tranny at a local junkyard. I forgot to ask what model, but am asuming that it is a 240D as those are most common around this area. I need the tranny for our 72 220D. Was wondering how compatible mercedes transmissions are. Are they a direct swap, or do you run into linkage problems? Any help and insight would be greatly appreciated.

Auto or manual?

Never mind - read your post more closely. I will look in my diesel book when I get home.

went and checked out the rig today. Turns out it was a 75 280, which is a w114 chassis instead of w115, so I don't think it would be a direct swap. The junkyard also had a 240D, but it was newer (4 headlights) and had a floor shift (as did the 280) which I think would complicate things even if the tranny did fit. I don't want to have a bunch of trouble with linkage and stuff. I am still curious as to trans. compatability though. Thanks

According to my book, the 68-73 220D takes a K4C025 transmission,
and the 280 takes a W4B025. The cars with a K4C025 are: 68-73 220 68-69 230 68-72 250 & 250C 73 280C 68-71 280S |
Hey thanks alot for the info, should make locating a tranny much easier!
