She's been added to the fleet, I plan on fixing her flaws so she can be admired by a future generation.

People frequently ask me, "what do you do?" And my response explains how I take care if the farm, take care of granny, and save old wounded Mercedes from oblivion. Without fail they then ask, "Well what do you do with them once you fix 'em up?"
My response? "I usually name them and then form a rapid sentimental attachment which causes me to never part with then." Some people get it, and some people drive an amorphous lozenge shaped commuter lump of stylized plasticarbon silicon which has a life span not dissimilar to a cup if milk in an Atlanta summer during an electricity outage.

I'm blown away by my finny every time I get inside. I'm going to need to spend some time looking at the column shift linkage as it's sloppy and occasionally slips into neutral. Also, the shift indicator is broken. The transmission, on the other hand is brilliant! Reciepts indicate it was rebuilt in 1998 and it doesn't appear to leak. The shifts are the best I've ever felt in a fluid coupled tranny. Very rapid and firm with little interruption in power delivery. Most of the LCA bushings are creaky, which enhances the old car appeal. I do desperately miss the presence of a center armrest between the two front seats. The lack of power steering is really a treat when you're on the go. Nice and direct with lots of feel and feedback without being sloppy or wandering too much. A new set of tires will bring about a world of improvement. I also think one of the bearings or the diff is rather noisy. The mechanical drums in the rear actually feel pretty good cable wise, but I suspect the shoes are on their way out as the brakes are soft initially but firm up once the discs in front bite. I'd also like to replace the leaking heater core (the heater core is bypassed right now so that the coolant does not leak.)
The door seals definitely need to be done all round, but the front and rear glass seals look decent. Well find out first time I wash her.

Interestingly, the engine oil dip stick shaft can be pulled free from the oil pan along with the oil dipstick. What's the proper method for checking the oil level for this motor? I don't have An owners manual.

oil check is as other cars, I dont think the shaft should come off, but I could be wrong.
And I do know what you are saying about preservation. I'd rather be ( and I am ) driving a vintage Benz around then a generic plastibox of today.

Missed this post!! Your Italian is great mate. All I seem to be able to remember with any degree of success is, "Porte avere una birra Morretti senzi il bichere per favore?" and "Dove il bagno?" LOL.

cosė ottenete allora potabile avete bisogno di un bagno.
so you get drunk then need a bath...ha ha ha
Handy i suppose.
The dipstick might have a plate about halfway up which bolts to the block or injection pump on SE models. They just push into the bottom . I usually stick some araldite or similar on them to make it a permanent fit. Other wise oil leaks out all the time.

Lesson learned today. Using a floor Jack on a fintail without bending the car is difficult. I heard a pop and a small seam opened on the unit body floor. I'm debating if I should post the Idiot Evidence photograph. I feel stupid, but thankfully the doors all open and shut fine, same goes for the trunk. I'm glad I can weld.

Always lift under the middle of the front axle and the diff. When supporting a finny, place your axle stands under the lower controls arms in the front ,and under the chassis rail each side. And at the back, just inside of the rear jack point.

Never let a front axle hang, because it wi.l tear the body mount bushes on each side.
never lift under the sill/rocker sections because it squash them.

Superfantabuloso!!! Need hundreds more picts of the heckflosse!!! Looks like a perfect example, nice body, beautiful interior, super clean engine bay! and a wonderbar to boot! You'll get the jack point stuff fixed in no time!
Glad to hear granny is enjoying herself a little more, take her out in the heckflosse and go look at the xmas lites...give her a hot toddy for the ride, put a little clove and cinnamon in the warm apple cider and add a little hootch to it, she'll have a great time with a chauffeur ( I never said that)

DROOL DROOL DROOL.....HAPPY 4 U!

Starting Lineup... Minus one.

Hello vintage friends. We managed to line up the Mercs the other day so I could take a few photos on film. The only one absent is "Mert" who is off having new front glass put in.
