Possible problem with new Wire Set. Please advise..
 

UPS guy just dropped off my new plugs and wires, and upon inspecting the wires I noticed that 1 of the boots is different than the others.

Of the 7 wires in the box:
1 is for the coil
there are 5 various lengthed with the SAME boots

and 1 smaller Elbow boot. This is the one that I dont like. Its about the same length as the shortest "normal" booted wire.

Also, the one in question has a 5k ohm resistor written on it, and the 5 others have 1k resistance.

part numbers (5 boots):
0356301022

the other one:
0356351027

This is for a 1970 280 se/sl. Wire set part number : 09023

I just want to make sure nothing has accidentally been mixed up. Thanks a lot!

I will go out on a limb here and hazard the opinion that your parts provider (who has remained nameless) screwed up. Get on the phone and get them to straighten it out. The #'s don't match and the parts don't match, someone definitely dropped the ball. Good luck.

That's the same set I have on my 280S. The 90-degree elbow is for the #1 spark-plug, it is bent so it would clear the distributor.

whew.. But i still dont understand why its bent; or why it has a different resistance...

I just ran out and looked, and #1 is nowhere near the distributor.

What engine do you have in your 280SL?
 

Your 1970 280SL is a W113, right? So you should have an M130 engine, similar as those found on the 280S/E. The distributor on the M130 engine is really close to the #1 spark-plug.

You don't have an M110 twin-cam 280 engine on a W107 280SL, do you?

yes, I have the M130 engine...

I guess it's close, but I don't see how a straight boot could get near the distributor. The wires that I replaced were ALL straight.

Anyway, I feel better knowing you got the same thing in your box.

On the M130 - 280S carbureted engines the distributor is behind the timing chain, next to #1 plug but, because the fuel injection unit is located there on the injected SE / SL engines, the distributor mounts way out in front of the engine block.
