My 73 280 SEL has no gear indicator on the instrument cluster. There is a place for it but it has been covered with black paper.
I haven't examined the transmission linkage yet and don't know if the Bowden Wire has been disconnected or removed. My question is: Was this an option and my car just doesn't have it or is this something my car should have but was removed by the previous owner? Either way, it sure would be a nice feature. My 72 280SEl 4.5 is set up exactly like yours. I beleive earlier versions or the 3.5 had column shifters which used this feature. Hope this helps!

I believe the floor console shift was the option.
