Oilpressure
Hi all,
Got a question about the oilpressure. Can the state of the engine be read by the oilpressure ? The needle goes right up to the 3 mark and stays there even when running idle for minutes. After about 10 minutes it will come down to 2 1/2 . Is this good or ?? It's an 1968 W115 200 ( /8) |

Generally speaking, engine oil becomes thinner when warmed. This circumstance will result in a lower oil pressure reading. Quite normal.

Its more likely to indicate engine idle speed than condition. Properly set and warm, oil gauge deflection is about half way. (mine reads psi, don't know the Bar conversions off the top of my head)

Your oil pressure sounds fine (assuming that the sensor and guage are accurate).
One bar = (approx.) 1 atmosphere = 14.7 psi

hmmm ok but what can be the cause of failing oilpressure ?
just curious |

As the oil warms it gets thinner, thinner oil produces lower pressure at idles. Showing 2-2.5 bar at idle hot is great pressure for the old beast. The 4.5 at hot idle, 100*F outside temp will drop to 1.5 bar, about halfway between 15 and 30 psi.

Good Question!
I have similar question. My 450 SEL 1976 is running great. But Oil pressure sits low lbs/ft (25%) and when i drive it goes all the way up....Looks like it would love to keep going if that pin wasnt there.
Is this a guage problem? Sensor problem? Both? Or do I have huge troubles coming? Thanks for any help and reassurance. Mike

Doesn't sound like any problem. Sounds like the gauge and oil pressure are doing their thing accordingly. Gauge should peg as soon as it comes off idle, or at least by 1K RPM. Hot idle can fall as low as .7 bar (~9.8 PSI) without worry, but my 4.5 will only fall to about 15psi (a shade over 1 bar).
My gauge is in PSI (0, 15, 30, 45), yours may be too, or may be in bar, with only numbers 1,2,3.

Thanks <Mike
Great
At least I can sleep tonight. I should have bought one of these years ago. Up here in Alberta, there aren't too many 450 SELs. It turns heads. I will need to do some body work sooner than later to keep it that way... But I really am glad I bought it. Thanks again Mike McEwen
