Looking For! W108 Rear Differential

Hey guys

I blew up my rear end in my '69 280S this past weekend. Looking for a replacement if anybody has one laying around. I am located in the Midwest but I don't have a problem with shipping.

Thanks

Adding your specific location (city, state) to your profile would be useful.

Interesting. But if that's your 69 280S I'm guessing it isn't driving yet (or at least HVAC isn't integrated yet). But if it is driving, I think we can guess how your rear end blew up. I would think you would do better with the rear axle from a W108 4.5. More pics please.

Yeah, it's been driving for 2 years now. The shift into second has always been pretty violent so I always let off the gas and on Friday it finally had enough haha. I am weighing my options, if I can find a stock diff I'll do that but it would be much better with one of those fully independent rear ends that you weld in.

a) more pics please
b) If you use the rear end from a 4.5 you will probably be able to handle the torque better plus you will have a much better gear ratio
c) what engine is that you are using? And what transmission?

Here is an article speed hunters did last year when I was down in GA for a euro show.

Old Benz, New Tricks: Slammed With a Small Block - Speedhunters

Thank you for the info! I may have found rear end locally but not entirely sure yet.

It has a 350 Chevy small block and a 700R4 Transmission.

I generally hate cars with mods and have to say that your car is fantastic. Except for the knob on the gear selector. Someone please send him a correct gear lever with the ivory handle... Really nice job.

Thank you! I really appreciate that. Haha, I didn't even know that I had a different knob from stock!

Here's a picture of the correct knob. I wasn't able to find one that included the whole selector, just the knob.

A very neat ( both meanings) and inspired job. The only thing that doesn't look "right" to my eye is the cut springs look. Throws off the rear camber, too and hence rear tire wear, but of course you know that.
Yeah, you will want a 4.5 dif or maybe even a 6.3. You need to talk to somebody who really understands the extent to which each of these are "beafed up" compared to your original 2.8 dif. I recommend Pierre Hedary in Rockledge, FL. 407-765-2867.

If you just need a stock rear-end, or should I say if you are willing to settle for a stock rear-end, then get on car-parts.com and put in your info. A few will come up, or they usually do.

Then you just start making phone calls and working out the shipping. Grayhound is the cheapest if you live near a Grayhound station and the shipper will agree to send it that way.

BC-scoob:
Is your car gray-beige/light beige/hell beige (paint code 181)? Is that single stage or base-clear? Do you know what brand of paint was used? It looks great.

I just found a stock replacement that I'm picking up. Eventually I'll go with a Heidts rear end set up.

Yeah I know it throws off the camber but surprisingly the fronts wear way faster than the rears as my suspension is pretty sloppy in the front. I'm just into slammed cars, it was actually lower when I first bought it which is one of the reason why I was able to buy it as the motor mount was broke from the oil pan hitting the ground so hard!

It's a base clear paint that's PPG. It's a stock Benz color that looks beige in person. I don't remember the paint code off the top of my head but I'll get it for you.

"stock replacement" could be different axle ratios. Really would be good to get one more suited to the engine...
