Progress

Hello Peaches,

I have made a small amount of progress lately with Dolly. I pulled the gas tank and cleaned up the fuel level sending unit. POR15 makes a fuel tank cleaning kit that I am using to restore the tank; it has three parts, degreaser, metal prep and POR coating. I did the degreaser part already.

The clutch is working now after installing clutch master and slave cylinders with a new hydraulic line. I have the kit to rebuild the brake booster, but decided to borrow the booster from the Emerald Bullet to get Dolly working brakes immediately.

I am going to use the extra gas tank I have cleaned to get Dolly running this weekend. Now that Code Blue is gone I am ready to consolidate storage units. Dolly has a trailer hitch and will soon be pulling my parts collection from the old storage unit I outgrew to the new one. Tuesday evening I moved Dolly to the larger unit. See pictures!

I bought the fuel strainer and gasket for the fuel level sender from our host!

Will post a video of Dolly running soon!

Best regards,

Jeffrey

Thumbs up Dolly Awakens

Thanx ! this is so nice to see , there's lots of background noise so I couldn't make out the usual sweet sound of the InLine 6 cylinder OHC engine purring

It's nice to see the lights and radio work , hopefully you'll soon be driving her again .

Thank you all,

It was joyous to have the car running for five minutes. The Christmas music on the radio was a pleasant surprise for me; one of those old songs that seemed appropriate at the moment.

The carburetor seems to be due a cleaning and rebuild. I bled plenty of air from the brake lines but they are still going soft. The engine sounds good. It will get an oil change before I actually drive it. I have many items on the list to do.

The engine does indeed sound good. Though I'm surprised you haven't already done the oil change - meaning done a change before starting for the first time.

Thumbs up

Agreed the music was very nice and appropriate too ! .

I saw a fan in the background and wondered if perhaps it was running and masking the engine's sound ? .

I too am surprised you didn't change the oil first , basic dino based multi-vis oils are cheap as dirt and very good for re awakening old dorment engines , I do a lot of them and care taken now will result in better results .

Have you pressure bled the brakes or just pumping and holding ? .

It's very important to fully flush out every bit of the old black fluid before attempting to bleed the air out , this way even if you have to replace components later you'll have clean fluid throughout instead of dirty old abrasive fluid rapidly wearing the new part$......

Pressure bleeders are now very affordable , I bought one a few years back and it's still going strong , I replace the fluid every two years or sooner if it turns black .

Brake fluid and labor is much cheaper and easier than failed brakes .

The oil is clean. The valve train looks brand new. The original owners son kept the car running but didn't drive it. The battery date is 2011. I am guessing the oil is probably about four years old. I turned the crank by hand and the engine moved easily. Then I turned it with the starter motor having disconnected the distributor wire to see correct oil pressure. Then I started it normally with fresh gas. I am going to change the oil and filter before I run it again.

The air conditioner works! That is good news because Texas temperature is above warm most of the year.

Dolly has left the building!

Hello Peaches,

Made progress over the weekend...

The wheel wells are notorious for rusting on these cars. The trunk hinges have drains that use rubber hose to carry the water out. Typically the hose will dry rot and crack allowing water to drip into the wheel wells and eventually feed the iron oxide (rust) corrosion. The metal in Dolly's wheel wells are solid, but I saw the orange color of rust appearing on the surface. I used a wire brush head on the air tool to lift the orange away from steel and vacuumed the dust, wiped with alcohol and when it was clean and dry applied a coating of black POR15. If you have never heard of POR15, look it up on the Internet or more likely YouTube. I used POR15 on flimsy rusted metal on The Emerald Bullet that felt like hardened steel when the brushed on coating dried. The rusted spots that I treated five years ago have not corroded again. Rust is the enemy of these cars. Preventing Dolly from suffering corrosion is an important aspect of preserving and maintaining it to last another fifty years.

I flushed the brake lines using the Mityvac purchased at Harbor Freight for $39.99 to suck the fluid through/out.

When I started the engine last week the carburetor was acting sticky to control. I lubricated each of the areas in the linkage and moving parts on the carburetor body with WD40 so that the fuel delivery control system has fluid motion. The lag between pushing the accelerator and engine response disappeared and I felt confident enough to pull Dolly out of the garage under her own power.

I drove Dolly around the parking lot within the gates of the "closed course". I made a horrible video to document the historic occasion. If you get car sick easily, watching this could make you queasy.

Nice video - you really ought to put in a complaint with the management - there's no reason for those viscous speed bumps everywhere! They nearly made you drop the camera out your hand.

Ha! No speed bumps... That is me holding my iPhone to take video while trying to steer and shift at the same time.

By the way, it is a very bad idea to hold a video camera to record your driving. It is dangerous. I did this at 8am in a fenced in parking area. Normally I would use a tripod or mount the camera so I can focus on controlling the car.
