Thanks gmog220d. I suppose I could also use a timing light and tach/dwell meter...

Timing light would have a higher priority for me. My dwell/tach meter busted years ago and I have yet to replace it.

I'll get one asap.

Just ordered a MC and SC for the clutch. Apparently they changed the type of MC and SC during the run. Both changed style at #108749. Those past this chassis number use a different style. I may be spending money unnecessarily as I don't know the old ones don't work but I figure new ones can't be a bad thing. I'm hoping they are simple enough for me to install. I see the MC is, just don't know about the SC... Any advice?

What about replacing the hard lines? This clutch line seems to be kind of rusty. To replace them I'd need the line bent properly and both ends flared and the proper nut correct?

lines should be available, bending and flairing is a lost art . Generic metric lines are available with the proper flairs , you can bend them yourself with a line bender

Who would have the lines available? Is this a dealer only thing? Or do you mean the straight ones I see at NAPA? I have small tubing benders, I could probably do that part. Don't have a flaring tool though.

I have had a tough time finding clutch lines for the old Mercedes hydraulic clutch systems. In the past, I have had to take brake line from the store and put open flares on the ends for it to fit properly.

The flare from the store was not adequate or they came with no flare at all?

What about the fastener? Do the ones from the store (the ones already flared) come with the compression nuts? I would think they have to be on there before its flared. As you can tell plumbing isn't my thing...

Yep - the flared lines come with the nuts. It's a good idea to take an old line down there to make sure the threads are a match. Chances are they won't have the exact length you need. In that case get one that's a little longer.

Thanks gmog220d, I hadn't thought of matching the threads. I guess I'll need to be sure I get metric threads so they mate up to my MC and SC.

I got spoiled by a place in Albuquerque called "PECO". They're an industrial supply place that specializes in hoses and lines for all kinds of applications. When I replaced all the hoses and lines in the '73 220D's clutch system they supplied me with everything I needed. They had the special hose that supplies the clutch system from the reservoir on the brake master cyl. They were able to make up the hard line for me to exact length using the original nuts. And they were able to use the original fittings from the flexible line to make a new line with fresh crimped on hose. I also used them for brake lines and hoses, too. Never cost a lot, either.

Maybe you've got a similar place somewhere near you? Might be worth making a few calls, especially if you have any trouble locating stuff you need for your car at regular auto parts stores.

Great idea gmog220d. I'm hoping to find a place like that in Norfolk. I don't see the need to get MB branded parts when a local shop can fab up something just as good. JeffreyNMemphis had a similar good idea in having the rear brake shoes re-lined at a local brake shop. MB wants well over $100/set, I think he paid $19 to get his redone.

I want to clean the engine compartment. What's the best way? I have a power washer but I know that's a no no. I guess the best way is with some simple green a brush and the garden hose with no nozzle? I know where I shouldn't get water, there is just a lot of dust, sand and leaves I want to blow away (or suck up with the shop vac?) to make it cleaner to work on.

On a similar note, I want to clean up the valve cover, I think its aluminum, so I should be able to scrub it with a scotch brite without damage, correct? What cleaner should I use on it? It is just lightly corroded from age.
