I'm thinking that was part of a pre production disguise.

In pic 3 you can see what looks like a covered grille, hubcaps that don't have a star.

In pic 5 you can see an outline where the real tail light would be and the extra fins were tacked on.

That almost looks like a W108 with fins. Quite unusual!

I’ve got some Gullwing Club newsletters from early 80’s and the classified section has a lot of cars for $5-10k.
