250SE Coolant System Routing?

Hey guys, I'm wondering if someone on here could shed some light on some cooling system routing for a 250SE? I had some replacement coolant pipes fabricated for my 250SE that has been sitting for years. It has been awhile since the cooling system was disassembled and I don't remember all of the details about what goes where.

There is a hard cooling pipe that routes around the front of the oil pan and goes over to what looks like an expansion tank on the driver side of the engine bay. There is a nipple on the top of it. Can anyone tell me what attaches to that point?

Speaking from experience with a 250S I'll tell you what I remember. The car has a heat exchanger to the driver side of the engine, water goes in it and oil goes in it. I don't remember the plumbing for it except that I needed the setup (putting a 280 engine in a 250, the 280 has the oil cooler next to radiator) and it involved stuff coming from the oil filter and going god knows where. Wish I could remember. If I have a pic I'll post it...

oil cooler for 250S

I found some pictures. This is a 280S engine using a 250S oil cooling system. Sorry, they aren't pretty, but may answer a few questions.

That first picture is the trick! Now my car has that nipple on the left side, but it appears blocked? I just assumed it wasn't used. I guess I will investigate and see if its plugged or what the status is.

Side note, just found out cylinder 4 has 75% leak down with burnt exhaust valves. Ugh, guess the head is now coming off.

Say, do either of you know if the heat exchanger can be removed without removing the engine mount arm? Thx

250SE: I hope you were able to sort out your cylinder head issues. Last time I wrote to Elring in 2019 they were not making new cylinder gaskets or gasket sets for the 250S. That M108 engine just didn't have a high production run.

My recollection is that it can be removed without removing the engine mount arm. I'm about 98% sure of that.

Scooter: Even with the tubing removed, the exchanger doesn't seem to have enough room to wriggle out. I have tne factory service manual for 1959. I want it, page by page, and didn't see any mention of it's removal or installation. Considering how quirky it is, there is very little info about it on the web. I haven't seen one on the YouTube place. I'll try again, after a couple of coffees.

Perhaps the motor mounts are collapsed. All I remember is that I was putting a 280S engine into a 250S and had to source the oil heat exchanger at a junkyard since my 250S came without an engine. And I was able to get it out without jacking up the engine or removing the engine mount arm... So that's all I can remember... good luck.

Scooter: I finally got the oil heat exchanger out. I did unbolt the mounting arm, on the suspension side. Then jacked the engine up from under the front oil pan. Finally wriggled it free. Absolutely no mention or hint of this that I could find in the big blue book. Thanks for your help.
