M130 Engine type research
I have gone down the proverbial rabbit hole researching differences in M130 FI engines found in a the 280 SE, 300 SEL, and the 280 SL. Variant designations were 130.980 for the SE sedan, 130.983 for the SL and 130.981 for the 300 SEL sedan. According to https://mercedes-benz-publicarchive.com/marsClassic/en/instance/ko/Welcome-to-Classic-MaRS.xhtml?oid=34685039
I know there are at least two versions of the camshaft which would account for the 10 extra horsepower on the 983 and 981 engines. I know the injection pumps evolved from the R20Y in 1968 to the R24Y in 1970 on the 980 variant. Also the distributor changed from 1968-9 to 1970 where the emissions specs drove changes on vacuum induced changes to timing. Does anyone have a table/list of the timeline changes for the M130 from 1968 till 1971? Online resources that I have been able to find don't detail that information well enough to satisfy my curiosity. |

two best sources I know of are the TDMs of the era, which will give you a survey of parts like cam shafts, distributors & pumps. Also, the hard copy (or fiche) for the M130E engine.
One wildcard is the set of service bulletins published before, during and after the time frame. But you can easily die of boredom or just plain miss important details while seeing all the other bits of trivia published. -CTH |

The classic center still had a few. The pop up on ebay all the time for anywhere from peanuts to "royal papers" grade pricing. Paying 20-40$ is reasonable for the ones from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

One mystery solved, but others may already know this, the "Y" designation is MIPs with the fuel shutoff solenoid. In other words, R24Y versus R24 is just that the Y designated a fuel cuttoff feature while in 3rd or 4th gears while the throttle is in idle position.
If I am wrong please tell me. Brad |
