Nothing has changed since the above post. I did start looking at the 250se 4-speed in my garage that is now buried in garbage. I’ve been buried in house projects and yesterday got a contract on the second house I was trying to sell this summer. Still have to get through the home inspection which will require some prior work, but after that perhaps life can get back to normal and I can work on cars again. However, we bought a real “keeper” of a house and rented it out for high dollar, so I do have some projects over there before things really get back to normal.

Someone asked me about the injection pump on this car, and I gave them the details including the check valve detail, but got zero response after that.

I need to start getting Techron into the 250se injection pump.

A very nice forum member here sent me an injection pump to try in the 280se, and all I did so far was try to clean up the outside of it a bit. Maybe this weekend I will get the opportunity to bolt it on, hook up my fuel rig, and give it another whirl.

There are multiple things that I could have wrong with the car though.

Timing: Someone told me how to check the static timing. I’ve never done that before and need to try the procedure I was given.

Valve adjustment: maybe I should have done this before.

Dry valves? So maybe I should be living the dry valves in some way? With so much cranking I’d been doing with the old IP, I tend to think this won’t be an issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions besides the above?

Thanks!
Mike

Well, the car started with the replacement Injector Pump on it and I promptly shut it down because I wasn’t confident I’d checked the coolant level. But then after doing so, I couldn’t get it to start again. I was right back where I came from. But then I disconnected the linkage from the FIP to let it sit at rest, and opened the throttle plate and was able to get the car to run while modulating the air intake. My gut tells me that this means the IP is providing too much fuel, but I don’t know these systems well enough. Additionally, this isn’t my FIP so I shouldn’t go messing with the settings.

I used a wad of cardboard in the throttle stop to keep the motor running for a bit, but don’t think I found any kind of sweet spot to keep it running long enough to do any other tests.

I had other stuff I had to attend to and stunk up my driveway with gasoline and exhaust to the point it was somehow stinking up the basement even though the windows were closed.

I’m wondering what I should do next and really just want to get rid of this car. I’m ready for someone to just take it off my hands. Just tired of it. I learned a bunch. Gotta go now really. I can keep the radio and a few other small items, and that will make me feel like I didn’t lose much more than time on this car.

Maybe I will feel more excited about it tomorrow.

Thanks for commenting. This morning I woke up and offered both the 280se and the 250se 4-speed to rwd4evr for free just to take them both away. It’s not that I don’t think I can be successful, but with the gas in my stomach last night that I believe was anxiety inflicted and annoyed with myself for making my home smell like gasoline and then spilling gas on my hand and phone too… I just don’t think I have the time for it. There’s another 25 cars besides these two. Offer is still out there for Jason Birch to take both these cars from me. I’m sure he’d rather have the 250se 4-speed, but the 280se has to go first. I see that a car like this isn’t worth much as there’s a much nicer looking same car I found for sale asking $750. So the only way this car will be worth much of anything is in pieces. The motor will be worth more out of the car. It’s just currently in a convenient carrying package that is also capable of keeping water off the motor. I had thoughts of cutting the car in half and disposing of everything behind the firewall. Somehow I don’t think that would make anything better though.

So when your in a hole. How do you climb out? Somehow strategically dig yourself some steps. Right? I guess those steps are going to be to figure out how to adjust an injector pump.

I watched one of MarkCan’s videos last night showing that he just kept flushing his FIP with transmission fluid to clean it up. I am thinking that since MY injector pump from this car (which I believe has a bad check valve on cyl 4) is not mostly drained of oil, it seems like maybe a transmission fluid bath is due. That should at least clean it up real nice.

I’m going to ask the owner of this FIP what I should do and if he would like to sell it to me before I start trying to “tune” it and potentially just ruin it. Cleaning it a bit, and installing it is one thing, but doing much more could end up breaking it. I will shoot him a note. Perhaps he’s reading this.

Just a wee bit rich. Wire brush time.

Is it just the lighting or is #2 not as covered with soot as the rest?

2 seems to be fuel-soaked I think. So maybe that injector is bad.

I’m reading this thread here and see the CSV is supposed to get lots of power and also many people wire power to the CSV manually. I had the best running when I first started out, and I recall the power to the CSV is not on every crank, like maybe just the first crank. If that’s the case, it sounds like mine is t doing what it is supposed to do and perhaps I should wire a button / switch to the CSV.

I get smoke out of the intake manifold often. So maybe it’s time to check that timing too.
