w108 Blaupunkt Radio Removal, HELP!

Hello Gents,

I'm a new user so Greetings & Salutations from Chile to all of you. I really hope that you all, and your Familes, are doing fine in good spirit and health (darn COVID!).

I'm the proud owner of a 1971 280S W108 I'd inherited from my Dad, and the car spent 10 years sitting in my garage because of a clutch master cylinder problem. Only recently I was able to figure it out and fix it on my own, so I'm trying to bring "her" back to its glory. One of the issues it has is the Blaupunkt radio that comes with it, as I have no clue on how to remove it.

I tried removing the knobs and the tone/tuner ones, plus removing the flat nuts behind them, but the stripped face plate doesn't come off. It's firmly stuck there and I'm wondering if there's something I might be missing here.

Thanks in advance for your kind help, and please excuse me if this was already asked before, but I couldn't find any straight DIY instructions or gain acces to Jamie Kop's instructions (for Becker's? - BTW, does anybody have these instructions in a .pdf that might share with me?-).

DF Please post a picture, it might help if we can see the job in question i have the same make radio in my car but mine is a removabkle one that has this handle built in to the facia so i can remove it from the car .

A photo is this case is a must. Backers were the most common radio of this time and the Blue Spots were usually a dealer added item. They are also normally bolted into the dash of the car somewhere on the rear or the sides.

This would mean going in behind the A/C assembly if there is one.

Some of them also used a different radio antenna lead than was used on the Becker, so be careful when removing the antenna lead. These weird plugs are hard to find.

Thanks for your kind answers, and please excuse me for not being able to answer before, as I was dealing with an electronic start conversion (actually I'm still dealing with it, but at least I made it work). The following are the only decent pictures I could get out of my IPhone (Old 8), and hope they might help for your evaluation.

Take the set screws off of the knobs and remove the knobs. slide off the rings that were behind the knobs (tone?). Do you see some hex nuts under all that? If so, remove those. Does face come off and radio slide through the back?

I did remove everything that seems removable, also removed the ashtray to get a better view but....., it's not budging at all, and it doesn't seems to have any additional hex nuts. Please see attached pictures as it seems that maybe removing a rear bracket (circled in red in one of the pictures below) could help to get it out.

Any comments/suggestions will be highly appreciated :)

The photos are great. But we need to see deeper. Pull the knobs off and the face plate should come off. You might have to removed some large nuts over the tuning and volume stalks.

When you have it down to the bare face look for two large screws on either side of the tuning face. These will go through some metal pins that are removed after the large screws are loosened. Do not remove the screws as the pin might drop down behind the console and they are taught to get at down there.

I still think there might be a bolt attaching it on the rear to a metal brace. Blaupunkts were sort of known for that bolt back there. But some installers were too lazy to install them. If you have the pin type mounting the rear bolt is not really necessary on these lighter units.

Finally I was able to do it. Before I was trying to get everything out from the exterior frame, the one that it's bolted with the hex nuts you've mentioned before. I didn't know that the radio listed plastic cover sheet was separated and was the one to come off first.....duh! Well, I've figured it out and made it, so now I'm facing a new challenge....., how to disconnect those cables shown in the pictures below. They go inside of the readio, so no chance to diconnect them directly. Do you know if further down following them, they might have some kind of connector to the antenna or any other part of the car? (there's 2 cables that goes in the same place of the radio)

Hi Guys,

Just to let you know that I was finally able to figure all out (the disassembly part), so now it's time to start diagnosing the root cause for the radio system malfunction.

I am glad I could help. I learned a bit, too. Here in the US it seems that almost every Benz from that era came with a Becker. But the Blue Spot was the choice for many other imported cars and I run into a lot of them, too.

Thanks for putting up with us. This method of communication is slow but it beats the old days of plowing through libraries for the answers.

Thanks Idle, my pleasure. The main problem with the radio was a bad ground or maybe a misconnection of the speakers cable. Ground and power comes from the amplifier to the radio and after 13 years......there's sound again :)
